East Bengal suffered a humiliating 0-4 thrashing at the hands of Chonburi FC in their penultimate AFC Cup match in Chonburi on Tuesday. With the emphatic win, Chonburi advanced to the last 16 stage of the tournament, even as East Bengal continue to struggle in the bottom of the group H table.
Pipob On-Mo scored two goals for the second consecutive match after Ney Fabiano and Therdsak Chaiman set the hosts on their way. After holding them for almost the entire first half, East Bengal conceded their first goal when Fabiano, after receiving Arthit's free-kick, flicked the ball past goalkeeper Sandip Nandy. Chonburi extended the lead when an onrushing Chaiman found the net in the opening minute of the second half. Fabiano then headed one for On-Mo to blast home the third in the 51st minute. Pipob completed the rout, 18 minutes later, when he scored the team's fourth and final goal of the match at the PE stadium.
The result moved the Thai side top of the pool on 10 points. The visitors had a sight of goal in the 16th minute when Tolgay Ozbey earned a free-kick just outside the box, but it came to nought.
East Bengal's best chance came in the 42nd minute when Penn Orji wrong-footed his marker down the right and rifled in a shot from eight yards but it flew over the bar.
