A 10-man East Bengal held arch-rivals Mohun Bagan to a goal-less draw

Laal-Holud Biswa - A 10-man East Bengal held arch-rivals Mohun Bagan to a goal-less draw in a local derby clash of the Calcutta Football League (Premier Division) at Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday. East Bengal were reduced to 10 men when Harmanjot Singh Khabra was sent off in the 73rd minute after a tackle on Snehashish Chakraborty but Mohun Bagan's strike duo of Jose Ramirez Barreto and Edeh Chidi did not get enough supply from mid-field to take full points from the match played in front of a packed stadium.

Out of the championship race in the local league, East Bengal coach Philippe de Ridder sprang a surprise when he opted not to start with star striker Bhaichung Bhutia. The Indian captain was brought in the second half which led to Abel Hammond being sent to the deep as one-man attack that did not pay any dividends. East Bengal had an easy opportunity just before the interval when Abel Hammond beat Sheikh Azim to enter the box but he messed it up later, missing the target.

Mohun Bagan intensified their attack towards the end but East Bengal defence held their rivals to return with one point. The two teams last met in Federation Cup semifinals when East Bengal won 2-0 after Bhutia's substitution.

Mohun Bagan now have 33 points on the sole lead, just three points ahead of second-placed Chirag United. East Bengal have 27 points.
